PHOENIX MEETINGS

TUCSON BREAKFAST WORKSHOPS

Date: February 1, 2008
Title: Teens, Families and Drugs
Description: The presenter will focus on the recent trends in adolescent substance abuse. We will examine the psychosocial dynamics that have played a part in the escalation of high risk behaviors among teenagers. We will also examine the predictors of treatment success. The essentials of conceptualizing a treatment approach, as suggested by the literature, both for in-treatment and post-discharge clients will be reviewed.
Presenter: Patrick J. Bararasso, MSW, LCSW - Patrick is the founder and Executive Director of In Balance Intensive Outpatient Program and the In Balance Ranch Academy. He is a noted psychotherapist with over 23 years experience in adolescent and adult substance abuse treatment. He is a frequent presenter at local and national conferences on a variety of adolescent topics, including the challenges of overcoming the culture of adolescent substance abuse.

Date: March 28, 2008
Title: Developing an Ethical Model In Working with Sexual Abuse and Families
Description: “Repressed memories”, leading/suggesting questions, mandated reporting, confrontation, reunification and a variety of cultural norms are just a few of the issues facing clinicians working with victims/survivors of sexual abuse and their families. This workshop will focus on using relevant ethics concepts and theories to help us explore our role in a competent, ethical clinical practice and the times at which legal and professional standards may conflict. Come ready to participate in a challenging and stimulating discussion. NOTE: You can apply the CEUs for this workshop toward the ethics requirement for your AzBBHE licensure renewal.
Presenter: Adena Bank Lees, LCSW, LISAC, BCETS - Adena is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Arizona. She is the author of the 12 Healing Steps for Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse: A Practical Guide   and Practical Tools for the Treatment of Childhood Sexual Abuse, a manual for professional clinicians. Adena has lectured to a variety of professionals throughout the United States on numerous topics, including sexual abuse and how it relates to eating disorders, distorted body image, sex/co-sex addiction, the cycle of sex and love addiction, and PTSD and dissociative disorders.

Date: May 16, 2008
Title: New Thoughts for Couples in Therapy
Description: This talk combines cognitive therapy with a system’s emphasis on self-focus (that is, responsibility for self and one’s own part in the couple’s conflict). We will discuss four universally erroneous beliefs that couples come to therapy with and suggest four “new ideas” the partners should substitute for the errors.
Presenter: Leo Fay, PhD - Dr. Fay retired in 2000 as Associate Professor of Sociology at Fairfield University in Connecticut. He was trained (1979-1983) at the Center for Family Learning by Drs. Phil Guerin and Tom Fogarty. He is a Connecticut-licensed MFT and is the co-author of The Evaluation and Treatment of Marital Conflict (Basic Books) and Working with Relationship Triangles (Guilford).
